About 6 months ago I had this "brilliant" idea that I would like to monitor the water level of my plants living on my balcony. The goal was to keep them healthy and happy (and producing vegetables for me in my urban garden). After looking for a commercial solution to aid me in this project, I discovered that there wasn't anything out there that would do what I need. The primary reason why nothing worked for me was that none of the products out there are capable of monitoring multiple plants at once, leaving me with the need to buy multiple units. At 10-15 containers for plants, this was immediately recognized as unrealistic, due to their high individual cost. Being the enterprising person I am, my immediate thought was, "I will just build one! How hard can it be?" Six months have passed and I am starting to grasp the reality of it. It isn't hard, in the sense that... (more)

Taking Back IT - DevOps: Part 3 | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Microservices

In my last post I spoke about the concept that Operations needs to understand and embrace the ____ as a service model (viewable here). The concept is difficult, but the reason it has to happen is that it is the most core tenant of DevOps, and it is the only way organizations will be able to truly drive digital transformation.  This matters more than ever, because in the new digital wasteland we live in,  failing to transform is agreeing to die. Transform or Die That sounds a bit heavy handed, but it has a lot of logic behind it for the operator and for all of us trying to take bac... (more)

IoT for the Rest of Us - The IoT Paradox | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #API

Welcome to part one on my new blog series of IoT-focused postings. The IoT has been picking up a lot of steam recently and as someone who works with numerous companies building networked devices, I am fortunate to see the evolution of the modern IoT firsthand. This series will focus not just on the IoT and what it is and where it works, but we are going to be building along at home as I undertake my own IoT journey. From start to finish I will document my project and the results, and share what I learn. To get started though, the post that I wrote that really spurred me on into t... (more)
